During the 17th century, lotteries were common in the Netherlands. They raised money for a number of public purposes. They financed schools, libraries, fortifications, bridges, canals, and even colleges. Some colonies also used lottery funds to finance local militias.

During the Roman Empire, lotteries were mainly amusement at dinner parties. During the Saturnalian revels, wealthy noblemen would distribute tickets with prizes in the form of money or property.

The first known English state lottery was held in the year 1569. Several towns in the Low Countries, such as Leuven and Leiden, held public lotteries to raise money for fortifications.

There is evidence of a lotterie in the town of Ghent in Belgium. Records from the 16th and 17th century indicate that lotteries have been held in the city since the time of King Francis I.

The United States has more than 100 federal, state, and local lotteries. Some are organized so that a percentage of proceeds is donated to good causes. Some of the most popular lotteries include Powerball, Cash4Life, and Mega Millions.
