The Basics of Poker

Poker is a card game where players have “chips” to bet with. Each player is dealt 2 cards and there are five community cards, which all players aim to combine into the best 5 card “hand”. Each time a bet is made by any player, if everyone else folds that player can win all the chips in the pot. There are usually rules for how the winnings are distributed at the end of the game, so that even if you don’t win all of the chips, you can still walk away with some money.

The game is played in a circle and each player has a turn to act, starting with the person to the left of the dealer. The action of the game is fast-paced and betting continues until one player has all the chips or all players fold. You can choose to check (pass your turn to the next player), call (match a bet) or raise a bet.

There is a lot of information to collect about an opponent in poker, and it can be hard to know how much to trust. Professional players are experts at extracting signal from the noise and at integrating that information to exploit opponents and protect themselves.

The best poker players have a clear goal in mind, such as getting into the final table of a tournament or winning a high stakes game, and then they make decisions to achieve their goals. They use their knowledge of probability, decision making and game theory to make the best possible decisions at any given moment.
