In the modern sense of the term, the first regulated state lottery was launched in New Hampshire in 1964. It was followed by New York in 1966 and many other states. In the early days of the American colonies, lotteries played a major role in financing public projects, including schools, roads, canals, and churches. In the 1740s, they helped fund the foundation of Columbia and Princeton Universities. The money raised by lottery proceeds was also used to finance local militias and wartime fortifications.
